You’re Not A Farmer
My neighbor told me yesterday morning that I’m not a farmer. It was in response to me informing the municipality that there was a leak in a city-maintained sprinkler adjacent to the property and my attempt to fix it with duct tape.
But am I not a farmer? Should I be offended over this comment?
I’ve grown super hot pepper plants. I’ve planted a garden. I subscribe to a great YouTube channel on self-sufficient growing:
Does one’s main source of income need to be derived from agriculture to be considered one?
However, I think agriculture is going to come home to many of us over the next decade. Container farming has had recent success. Companies like Freight Farms are sending out containers that allow food deserts to start producing fresh produce or stores to sell what grows in the parking lot. However, there’s more to come.
Robotics combined with container farming might make containers a way to specialize in the production of produce with less environmental impact. Combined with continues monitoring and sharing of data, robotic container farms will be able to quickly iterate on the best methods to increase yield or reduce energy in growing produce.
If we end up owning one of these robotic farms, will that make us farmers?
