Yesterday, I learned the term coined for the upcoming cryptographic catastrophe to be brought on by some advancement in quantum computing. Y2Q refers to the moment when quantum computers will be able to near-effortlessly decrypt even the most secure codes.
Quantum computers offer the promise of instantaneous solutions to standard problems that could take an eternity for traditional computers to solve. Turned against ciphers, this could mean the end of the era of current methods and RSA and current cryptocurrencies could be affected.
But it’s not the end of cryptography. In advance of this doomsday, researchers are already looking to implement quantum-based encryption that will require the next breakthrough to easily decode. As most new things coming from accelerating technologies, Y2Q might happen sooner than we expect. Better to start looking for opportunities now.
