Will the Real AR Please Stand Up

It baffled my mind a few years ago to hear that Facebook could be spending hundreds of millions of dollars on creating an AR filter/mask. What?? Why?

The tech companies could play with developing AR for consumer messaging application and get practice for the real deal. This included facial recognition and emotion detection. However, these just scratch the surface of where AR is going to go.
