Voice in Hong Kong — Spring 2018

I just got back from 48 hours on the ground at the Global Sources and the Hong Kong Electronics Fair and while I went in with a bias, voice is the biggest it’s been. Several dozen speaker makers are shipping Alexa-enabled speakers and will soon be shipping Google Assistant enabled devices.

Every IoT device was showcasing how it could be controlled through Alexa/Google Assistant and more than half of the speaker companies on the show floor (and a larger proportion of those with some market share) had voice speakers. The remainder were “not yet” or were planning within the next year.

The biggest trend observed at the show… wireless ear buds. Many companies seem to be following the AirPod lead, offering up recharging cases together with these devices. We’ll likely see many of these hit CES in January.
