Triby by Invoxia was a pioneer in the Alexa Voice Service world. Coming out in 2016, it was one of the first (if not the first) product with Alexa built it. It offered both handsfree and push to talk capability.

First generation products are tough. It seemed that the biggest issue was with consistency.

For a non-brand hardware product, these reviews are actually very good. Many bad reviews can be attributed to difficulty in setup or even to things that are beyond the control of the company (e.g. slow WiFi or the user doesn’t like the response from Alexa).

However, one of the more frustrating issues is when the device doesn’t become available. High availability is an absolutely must for a voice-first product. The unfortunate part is that there is a lot of performance overhead and testing required to make this happen. When building a hardware product for the first time, it’s hard to know how the device will last after being left on for a year. Will it lose WiFi capability? Will the glue on components come undone? Will APIs and credentials change?

For always on devices, perhaps a service that is well needed is a process accelerator? For example, for AVS devices this could be calling the service every few seconds for weeks on end in hot conditions. This is the first time we’re encountering products like this so we should expect that they have a finite lifespan. Device makers might add this as a feature for upselling to the next generation.
