Tracking You Tracking Me
I was happy to see that a recent Android update that shows you which apps are tracking your location. It’s a good step in the right direction towards data ownership.
Tim Horton’s, why do you need to know where I am all the time? Do you get jealous when I visit Starbucks?
The next level would be for apps to answer the question that my two year old now uses extensively when: WHY? As in… “Why do you need to know my location when I’m not using your app?
The app developer should address why it needs access to this data and what it does with it. And I’m not talking about aggregate data collection for service improvement… I’m talking about what alerts and rules it builds around geofencing.
The next stage in evolution after this is to provide a history of tracking. What did the app do in the past with the data it had from tracking you? We can’t act on what we don’t know.
