Too Many To Dismiss

I used to be very militant about notifications on my device.

This might sound like a “back in the day…” post but at one point, it was fairly straightforward to dismiss or mute notifications. Now, there are so many different layers of permissions that it’s easy to miss which apps have been enabled or disabled. Notifications can also be read but not dismissed, causing them to pile up (at least in Android) in the notification tray

A WiFi Connected BBQ might have produced 15 notifications during a cooking session and those ignored notifications pile up along with messages from other apps wanted attention. The result is that I feel we’ve reverted back to the days before notifications. I now need to go into an app to check for new messages, like I did when using dial up and Freenet.

This actually might mean we’re reverting back to a healthier way of consuming information. We need to actively seek it out rather than being pulled into it. The flip side of this is when we do choose to access information, we’re fed a never ending torrent.
