Thin Layers

Some of the most important things to us occur as thin layers. The thin layer of atmosphere stuck by gravity around the earth’s surface contains all of the life that we know of in the universe. Below that, 1% of the earth’s radius is the inhabitable crust. The rest is a molten ball of death.

Internally, it’s the same. Less than 10% of the brain is the prefrontal cortex. Some claim that 5% or less is consciousness and our understanding of our place in this world comes from there.

The thin layer of trust in each other, in money, in government is what makes society function. We can see when there’s disaster or conflict how necessary all of these are.

There’s very often some tiny factor that can make or break an entire product, feature, recipe, idea, movement. It’s the 1% rule, not 80–20. Understanding this can allow us to make much bigger and more positive impacts.
