The effects of easily generated music will have profound effects on how we consume music. Not since the invention of sheet music or the phonograph will there have been such an impactful development.
While generated music will be used in popular music, its effects are likely to be felt more in the long tale of instrumental and soundscape music. You want spa music? Lounge? Indiscriminate jazz? Orchestral? Want music to go along with that photo album collection, short, or post? Have it generated on the fly.
Instead of searching for a song, we’ll get access to stations that will not only exist for us but also generated music just for our taste. Of course, if you’re into lyrics-based music, you’re going to have to wait longer. But not by much. Autotune can also work on synthesized voices.
On the other extreme, it’s possible that pop hits are going to be customizable or that we’ll see fan-made mashups proliferate and become even more popular than the original. It will be much easier to create these new versions than before.
