The Emperor Has No Clothes
First, let’s establish that I’m very fortunate. Earlier this week, I had a chance to eat an upscale restaurant run by a renowned chef with wonderful people around me. It was a fantastic evening. The other thing that I was very lucky about was to try something that I had been eying for a long time — 3D printed vegan steak.
There is a brand of vegan meat alternatives here that sells certain products in retail and other products to food service. In this instance, the 3D printed meat is only available to food service and I had been looking for the opportunity to try it.
OK, having established that I’m really lucky, I can dive into what I thought. Meh-rvelous. A-meh-zing. Im-meh-culate. You get the idea. It certainly was tasty but it would have been better emphasizing its vegetable-ness rather than its meatiness. It was not steak. The mash, the vegetables around it were good. In fact, the same brand’s other products that I’ve cooked in home have been wonderful. The hamburger was on par with Beyond and approached Impossible. However, this steak was no steak. It was maybe a loaf? In fact, if it was cooked as such it would have been a real winner.
So I will continue to wait. My vegan steak is still ahead of me. Maybe the lab grown version will arrive before it. 3D printing can be left for dentures and bobbleheads.
