The CRISPR Valley
Several years ago, CRISPR was touted as a revolutionary breakthrough that was going to solve every health issue. Cancer? Neurological degeneration? Acne? There’s a CRISPR for that.
However, it’s quieted down a bit. Maybe we were worried about other health news but CRISPR seemed to fall out of the hype cycle. Which is exactly where the cool stuff starts to happen.
If we plot CRISPR on the Gartner Hype Cycle, it’s likely in the “Trough of Disillusionment” — a valley where if we make it through, we start to see real usage. The issue with medical breakthroughs is the time required to prove efficacy. Not all things have mandates given to them and some have delayed funding requiring the researchers to pay out of pocket.
Since CRISPR has emerged, there have been countless projects that have created trial uses of CRISPR. We’ll likely start seeing a wave of results in the next 1–2 years and then a steady tide of miracle-like products.
