The iPhone 16 was announced today. I didn’t know about it until I saw an video recommended to me about it on YouTube.

When the iPhone was in the single digits, I’d watch the live feed of the Apple events. They were spectacular. The difference between versions is now smaller, however, processing power and performance, especially for critical applications, is continuing to improve exponentially.

What’s incredible about the latest devices is that they can run optimized versions of generative AI tools that were trained with much more powerful networks. They can do so locally, without needing to access outside services.

We have yet to see third party apps truly take advantage of the convergence of on-device processing for generative AI, low latency 5G and WiFi 7, and even more GPU power will mean applications like augmented reality gaming where worlds are designed on the fly become possible. Whole movies with dialog can be created on the fly while looking through a device’s camera.

The iPhone ignited many people’s imagination when it was released. 15 more versions later and we’re now needing to stretch out imagitions to believe what is now possible.
