Speech recognition will never be perfect. One side is the imperfection of understanding. Recognition words and context is difficult, even for us. The other is that we know more than we can say verbally, so sometimes our words get jumbled up as they’re rendered from thoughts to words to spoken language.

However, we have mechanisms for correction. That involves asking for clarification or even better yet, expressing back our understanding and asking if this matches the intended message of the sender. This clarification request shortens the conceptual distance between the minds of two people (or systems).

Prompt designs can factor in the ability to be considerate and empathic. Restating an understanding of a request or the facts can also help create transparency in how AI’s respond to requests. We can also incorporate this into our day-to-day interactions to instantly become more empathetic.

Making machines more human also makes us more human.
