If you think prompt writing is what makes you human (nobody thinks that), then, then you might want to start looking for the next proof of humanity. Prompt writing or “prompt engineering” is the creation of prompts of generative AI services like ChatGPT or Midjourney. People can whisper to these services to get them to do what we want.

The issue, harking back to the Michael Polanyi quote is that “we know more than we can say.”

Not all of our thoughts, visualizations, and desires can be expressed through precise language that can be interpreted by a machine to produce some output based on a predictive model. Like working with molding clay, it helps if the initial block (in our case, the response from the system) is close enough for us to chisel away something good. Often, it’s not.

A prompt writing service could help address this. It would involve working with someone to eek out the proper prompt depending on the system and try different ways of aligning the AI to the request of the user. It could use iterative questioning to guide the user closer and get more feedback in a gentle, encouraging way that keeps the user engaged.

Ultimately, PWaaS’s would be great acquisition targets for the likes of Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.
