Primitive Technologies
I’m a big fan of the YouTube channel Primitive Technologies. It’s one of the more fascinating and relaxing things to watch on the web. (A trick I learned after many years of watching is to turn on closed captioning so you get an explanation). What drives me to the channel is the same moral behind the short story The Veldt. Would we be able to survive if all our technology disappeared? You could also take away the moral of not putting locks on nursery doors.
With the Primitive Technology videos, I wonder how quickly could our knowledge could help bounce us back to “civilization”. In the videos, the J ohn Plant, builds building supplies and tools, fire, and has started on metallurgy.
I wonder how quickly he could build a radio from wire he’s smelted. Or a steam engine, glass, an LED, lasers?
The question is worth asking ourselves… if all goes poorly, is there a Time Machine or Save Point where we can start from? Maybe it’s a cache of old technologies and how to use them?
