Amazon released news about its Sidewalk long range Internet connectivity for low bandwidth devices. It’s potentially a gamechanger. Ten years ago, we started to see an explosion of IoT devices (Ubi included) that could connect through WiFi. However, the biggest issue was being able to connect the device to the Internet.

Now, with Sidewalk, the biggest block — getting online — has been removed. Devices that only need to send occasional sensor data or be actuated can now connect directly to a service out of the box… potentially.

The low cost network could open the door for devices like the the Amazon Dash Button to have a comeback. It could mean tracking services could be incorporated into products. The IoT dream of everything connected could make a resurgence.

Combined with Kuiper, Amazon may take the lead as being the conduit to connectivity for much of Internet traffic within the decade.
