The Safe Jerk.

I enjoyed watching this review of Tesla autopilot on a Model 3.

It shows not only how we’ll likely be driving in the next 10 years but it also illustrates the issues we’ll have in dealing with AI. AI will help us with so many tasks but there are going to be many times where we’ll be scratching our heads or having to correct for glaring issues.

In the case of this video, the autopilot was doing the right thing but at the expense of being a considerate driver. It was slowing down in the passing lane, not letting in drivers, and merging at the last minute.

We’ll see the same novice behaviour in autoresponders, natural language generation, or whatever version of Google Duplex comes out. We’re going to have our patience tested.
