One of my daughters recently went to a game development camp and it was from her that I finally realized what sprites are. It then clicked with me how generative AI will make it much faster to develop new games and animations very quickly, especially games like Flappy Bird or anything in the style of Super Nintendo.

How?

By casually using generative tools like Midjourney, one can quickly build up necessary sprites in a single take. Here’s a quick example…

It’s possible to take this template and quickly turn it into usable pieces for a simple game. All that’s missing is a compelling story and that’s where other generative tools might be able to help.

That’s where the next level of challenge will occur. You can create sprites for a game like Cuphead in a matter of minutes and in the near future, the full game play can be put together. However, what’s the story? Today, ChatGPT and other systems will create a story but it will be so so. It won’t draw people in. This is where a game designer can create something that differentiates from other games.

We’re going to end up with some next-level entertainment because amazing story tellers will be able to make it beyond the limitations of their technical knowledge.
