I was excited to finally get my dash cam set up about half a year ago. It was sitting in a drawer for more than a year before that until I mustered up the courage to install it. It wasn’t hard to install but it wasn’t easy either.

And it’s not easy to use it. If I want to get the footage out, I need to get a microSD card reader or adapter, remove it from the card from the device, plug it into a computer, navigate to the file, transfer it, then play it. I must then remember to return the card to the device.

The device will also remind me that I need to reformat the memory to be able to continue to record. Ugh. It’s a horrible user experience.

What do I want? To be able to easily recall video of bad drivers around me or check if there was any strange activity around my car when I wasn’t there. It should be easy.

The better UX would be to have one button to flag a recording and have it saved from deletion down the line. It would then upload to a cloud service automatically when I park close to home.

An even better UX would be for the device to work over 4G and continually upload video, or at least whenever a button is pushed to mark a significant event

The best experience would be to have a truly forgettable device that constantly uploads video and then sends me a daily or weekly digest of interesting things that happened when I was driving or when I wasn’t close to the car or evaluates how I’m driving.

Make it easy!
