One of the big buzz words at MWC last week was LoRa. It’s a new standard for low bandwidth devices at distance to send and receive data. The transceivers can go down to sub dollar pricing and data plans will likely be in the pennies per year depending on how much data and whether real time information or actuation is required.

This is very exciting in that LoRa might offer up the potential of bypassing WiFi setup for users. Imagine a setup-free device that you just unbox and use… no need to even link it to you account or app.

5G will be there for video and realtime communication (and self-driving cars and other applications that need high bandwidth). For everything else, there’s LoRa.
