This weather reminds me of childhood in Ottawa. It felt like we’d normally hit -20C from late December to March. There’d be snow. Life would go on.

I used to think the coldness of Ottawa was just how my memory interpreted it. Then I looked at Environment Canada’s weather data and I realized Ottawa was really bad and it wasn’t just nostalgia.

What’s interesting is how easily technology is available to help reinforce memories. My kids can now look at photos and videos of themselves as they grow up and I’m wondering whether their memories will be of the event itself or a mix of first person and third person observations. Memory is a fickle thing and maybe at some point will give up on it and just hope our devices retain as much detail as possible.
