Strikes usually happen when the status quo is threatened. Sometimes, technology is behind the disruptions, sometimes, it’s just economic or societal changes. When the interests of the few who are striking align with the many who aren’t, it can provide the momentum to make a change to keep things as they are (or were).

The current writers’ strike cites old metrics for compensation and the rise of AI as main reasons for its strike. This is a tough sell. Sure, many love to watch certain shows but the real trouble is the abundance of content that can be accessed any time that’s ad or subscription supported. TV advertising doesn’t quite cut it.

In this instance, there may be market forces that allow for very talented content creators to wade above the AI fray. Their compensation will be aligned with the success of their projects. However, they will need to take an ownership position of their work. We need those people who cannot just generate ideas but also organize the production of them.

The content generator must also be the performer and the impresario. The result is that she will reap the rewards of her work to a much larger extent than her efforts as a mere ideas person. Yes, AI will make it easier to perform the tasks but it will require the will of someone to push these generated ideas into reality. There will be no one to strike against and the effort of a strike will need to be redirected inward at make the system perform better.
