Both iDevices and iHome have announced / released AVS-enabled devices. What’s similar between both these devices? They have indicators that face directly to the user (vs inline on the Echo or AVS speakers).

In the case of the iHome AVS alarm clock, it’s great that it features a prominent clock display and its visual indicator bar is much more prominent to the user than the original Echo’s indicator ring. It’s amazing how underrated a time display is — if it can be faintly illuminated at night, it offers value for those who are taking care of young infants or have other reasons to get up a lot in the middle of the night (or early).

iDevices announced the Instinct back at CES:

The ring can be illuminated or disappear into the background. Like this…

Both these designs are a departure from the other Alexa devices on the market, which seem like iterations of the Echo / Echo Tap.

I hope other device makers can be influenced by these designs in their next products.
