Don’t settle for pale memories. That’s the counter ad after an exhilarating chase scene in Total Recall. After the protagonist has literally used a human shield, he escapes on a subway where an ad for real space travel is playing. It purports that real experiences are better than fake memories.

Sure, when Neuralink is still in the early MVP days, the memories will seem faint but what if virtual and augmented reality are enough to trick us into new memory creation. I’ve never been to Mars but I’ve experienced Quaid’s adventure at least a dozen times. I can remember the lines, the emotions, the music.

Augmented reality is bound to create even more emotional experiences that will create memories. To this day, I’m cautious when traveling on escalators so I don’t look mindless and caught in the middle of a gun battle. What trauma might I experience through AR experiences?

While we won’t need memory implants, memories through these experiences will likely be much more powerful than those we generate today in traditional media. Even with that, we’ll still not get to see Richter at the party.
