Don’t Sweat the Spikes

Sometime, my ego is attached to the views and read of my posts. Last month, it got a big boost as I had a record number of views — over 25,000. “Finally,” I thought, “people recognize how smart I am.”

I’m not really sure why so many people were viewing my posts much more for a certain period of time. I didn’t dig into the traffic source but it did come after someone on staff liked something that I had written.

Traffic, attention, fame — they are fickle beasts. If you chase after them, it’s a constant battle to fan the flames.

The experience had many parallels. It happened with the Ubi shortly after our launch. Then, again when we rolled out our beta pre-orders. The waves diminished after that.

Spikes in sales, traffic, likes, etc can be great for getting new followers or long term customers. However, more than that, they can show you that you can start thinking bigger. Just don’t bet on it continuing on.
