Dim Screens

It could be that I’m aging and my eyesight is going, but are screens getting dimmer? I’d been looking for a new computer for my daughter and the mid to lower range computer (so that I won’t have an emotional melt down when water or sandwiches are inevitably spilled on it) all have dimly lit screens and are high latency in responsiveness. Looking back to the high end laptop I used ten years ago, it was fast and bright. Wouldn’t a high end computer from 10 years ago not be greater than 30x cheaper? Maybe not

If there is any place that technology has seemed to crawl, it’s in reaching retail markets with low cost high brightness and sharpness displays. That said, it seems we’re on the cusp of new technologies that will drive down the cost so that dim screen devices will be relegated to the Clearance Bin. OLED and MicroLED, among other tech, are about to see drastic price cuts that will mean better quality amongst all screen interfaces.

When small, cheap Android tablets start to look as good as iPads, we’ll know we’re about to see an explosion in uptake of these devices.
