Deepfake Mom
Catching the story on the Daily Show of all places, I was taking aback by how one mom tried to create fake videos of her daughter’s (ex) friends to get them kicked off their cheerleading team. There are now plenty of websites that can create semi-convincing deep fakes for only a few dollars. At least for now, these fakes are easy to detect.
However, it’s only a matter of time before these become extremely convincing and harder to detect. Or, they’re made to look more convincing by reducing the quality. Scammers will become savvier at using deep fakes to fool us.
Trevor Noah was right to state that it’s not Russian hackers that we have to worry about the most with deep fakes. It’s the everyday Jane or Joe who is going to use the technology to harm.
