Clunkiness of Apps

It still seems like my thumbs are slow.

Apps still feel clunky, even 15 years after smart phones gained prominence. This was one of the motivators behind voice — that is could allow applications to be accessed much faster. However, when you want to send a WhatsApp message, using a phone still seems clunky.

  1. Pick up the phone
  2. Press button
  3. Unlock the phone
  4. Find the app
  5. Press the app
  6. Find the contact
  7. Enter the text and send.

That is when everything goes perfectly. Most of the time, I slip up on one of these and lately, being around my kids more, there is something that they’re doing in the course of any random 20 seconds that prevents me from getting through the above.

At least on Android, ordering most likely apps first is one option to address this or even predicting the app that will be used in different settings could shave off some time. Maybe a smarter unlock (like based in WiFi connection) could be offered?

There’s more that can be done here.
