We carry with us devices of our own imprisonment. Within arms reach are cameras and microphones that can stream video and audio at all times and tens of million of households have always on mics. Almost every laptop has a camera and only a fraction are covered. While living in a democracy, we might assume that even if there were eavesdropping, at some point there will be a check on this power. But what if this check disappears? Or current adoption of technology is tomorrow police state’s dream. How can we embrace these technologies today but still be prepared to avoid the downside of them being used for surveillance if things change?

I just posted about this on my friend, Ari Shapiro’s website. Check it out here.
