Bing GPT Excel Coach
Everyday, it’s possible to uncover a “killer app” for ChatGPT. Today, it’s as an Excel coach. Yesterday, I was banging my head against the wall trying to find out why an Excel formula didn’t work when I thought hmm… why not ask ChatGPT?
Sure enough, it was able to respond back with a coherent formula.
However, I realized I ran into another issue. It was me. I had a hard time explaining what it was I was trying to do. I didn’t have the language. Was I trying to transpose a column? I had a list of items that repeated and I needed to put them into columns. Hmm. It was kind of like a delimited list, but delimited by line breaks. Hmm indeed.
Spending a few minutes, I eventually solved the issue on my own but still asked for a number matching formula. Instead of using the traditional “vlookup” way, it suggested a clever nested CountIf — If formula that did the trick.
It seems that, at least today, the use of ChatGPT lies a bit after a traditional Google search — where you need to dig a bit but don’t want to go down a long journey in Stack Overflow or similar. Perhaps even limiting the domain of ChatGPT to particular areas where people struggle to find answers might be a way to create killer apps.
