Assume Good Intentions
I enjoyed a recent episode of Lex Fridman interviewing Mark Zuckerberg. There is a lot to unpack from the interview, which you can watch here:
However, one of the interesting throwaway comments seemed to be that Facebook operates under the assumption of good intents. Now, those who have had posts removed by AI inadvertently over-sensoring certain topics will likely feel otherwise.
Three years ago, Facebook started to block my posts. I had written about my experiences with the pandemic and maybe that was enough to trigger something within the “community guidelines” policy, though I was never warned or told what it was.
If we’re going to use AI to ban or block something, we should at lease provide some transparency into why something was marked as such asn provide a means to address it. We can’t assume good intentions on the part of something banning or blocking if they aren’t being transparent and there is a vast imbalance in power.
