In this week’s Echo email, Amazon mentioned that they rolled out free joining of meetings via the Echo. If you integrate your calendar and the meeting has a call in number, it will be able to call and join the meeting for you.

Perhaps giving this feature away for free is a good way to get users on the system. Maybe it’s also a good way to get information on how people interact with their Echos and their calendars. There are many potential benefits.

Eventually, Amazon may push free conference calling via Chime to attract users to its system and maybe free call recording or more competitive features like meeting transcriptions and summarization. Amazon ultimately would want to get into corporate space and knows that getting savvy users to say “hey, I’m calling in through my Echo” might be a way to start .
