So Apple announced VR yesterday. For many years, Apple hinted at something you’d wear on your eyes and it’s not the first time Apple came late to the game but swept away the market…

  • Tablets (Microsoft)
  • Touchscreen cellphones (HP iPAQ)
  • MP3 players (Creative Nomad Jukebox)

What’s interesting is that Apple focused a lot on the aesthetics and making users look less isolated when wearing the device (by showing an image of the persons eyes). I’m not sure if someone would navigate the world while wearing these but early reviewers say the environment is projected well inside.

In its videos, Apple totes office and productivity use of the headset. I don’t know if that’s the killer app for these devices. There’s something pleasurable about a tactile interaction with a keyboard that just sitting, talking and gesturing. There’s also something nice about being able to look around and not be immersed in the work — to gaze and digest the task before taking another bite of it.

I’m hopeful that Apple VR will push the technology forward and that generative AI can then help reduce the time to create new immersive environments that can enhance the surroundings.

It’s time to dust off that old list of what’s possible with VR…
